Hartlepool man jailed after attacking policewoman

A man has been jailed after attacking a policewoman.

Magistrates decided to imprison Phillip Gerald Askew after deeming the offence to be “so serious” that it was the “only sentence justified”.

Askew, 33, of Tiverton Grove, Hartlepool, was locked up for four weeks after admitting that he committed the offence in town on May 17.

He also received concurrent jail terms, which will run alongside his sentence, after he pleaded guilty to two other charges.

Askew admitted resisting two police officers, including his assault victim, in the execution of their duty on the same date and to one count of breaching a restraining order on “numerous occasions” between May 20-24 by contacting another named woman and attending a particular address.

He was also ordered to pay the policewoman £50 in compensation by the end of this month.

Five other charges, including an allegation that Askew assaulted the woman protected by the restraining order on March 7, were dismissed at Teesside Magistrates’ Court.
