Middlesbrough fans returned to the Riverside Stadium earlier this week as England played an international friendly against Austria – while the club will also be hoping to make progress in the transfer market over the coming weeks.

Here are some of the latest Boro-related rumours from around the web, with the summer window set to reopen on June 9.

Boro face competition for Smith

Neil Warnock is hoping to sign three new strikers this summer, with Rotherham United frontman Michael Smith on the club’s radar.

The 29-year-old still has one year left on his contract at the New York Stadium, yet Rotherham are likely to face a battle to keep the player following their relegation to League One.

According to Bristol Live, Smith is being considered by Bristol City as Robins boss Nigel Pearson looks to replace Famara Diedhiou at Ashton Gate.

Smith scored 10 goals in 44 appearances for Rotherham in the Championship this season and scored against Boro at the Riverside.

Charlton striker latest

Another striker who has been linked with Boro is Charlton forward Chuks Aneke.

It’s been claimed the 27-year-old, who will be out of contract this summer, had turned down a new deal at The Valley after scoring 15 League One goals during the 2020/21 campaign.

Yet according to London News Online, Aneke has not rejected Charlton’s contract offer – but a number of clubs are interested in the striker.

TeamTalk recently reported that Championship clubs Boro, Reading, Coventry, QPR and Bristol City are all keen on the former Arsenal man and that he also has options in America and Scotland.

Former striker attracting interest

Finally, Tyrone O'Neill is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs after being released by Boro last month.

According to Football League World, Harrogate Town are among those interested in the 21-year-old, who spent time out on loan at Hartlepool United and Darlington after coming through the ranks on Teesside.

It’s also been claimed there are clubs in Scotland who are interested in the striker.

O’Neill made one appearance for Boro’s senior side during a Championship game at Leeds after he was recalled from a loan spell at Darlington.
